Youth can start saving money now by creating a piggy bank! It’s important to save money so youth can buy or do the things they want in the future. Youth from preK thru 12th grade can use their imagination and creativity to hand-craft a piggy bank and save money!
4-H’ers in 4-8th grades and our community club are asked to bring their entries to their March club meeting. However, this is an activity that is open to a larger audience than our regular 4-H activities.
Entries from homeschoolers, pre-K thru 3rd graders and 9-12th graders should be dropped off at the Extension office (302B Midland St, Somerville) no later than March 23rd. The office is open Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.
Although we would love for parents to take an interest in and encourage this project, the 4-H member should do the work on the bank. Banks should measure no more than 12” X 12” X 12”. There should be a way to both put the money in and get it out without destroying the bank. Banks should be sturdy enough that they can be transported for display without coming apart or anything falling off. We encourage youth to recycle things from around the house (plastic bottle, toilet paper or paper towel rolls, cereal box, etc.) so they don’t have to spend much on materials. They can use anything except glass.
The piggy bank pageant is a county and state level Extension activity meant to encourage youth to start the habit of saving early in their lives. The county 4-H piggy bank contest will be held during the day on March 29th; youth will not be present for county-level judging. County winners in each category will be eligible for an online statewide contest held in April.
We hope you’ll take this opportunity to not only encourage your child to make a Piggy Bank, but talk to him or her about the importance of saving money. There are huge benefits to saving early in life! To see a simple illustration of this that we guarantee will surprise you, visithttps://ag.tennessee.edu/fcs/Documents/WhyStartSavingEarly.pdf.
