Jr. Academic Conference is basically a mini-college experience for youth involved in 4-H held each June at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Youth are required to submit application materials, similar to an actual college. The topics are based on some of the 4-H project areas, ranging from beef to veterinary science. Projects are self-guided in 4-H, so youth do not necessarily need to have experience in a certain project area; but if they do, that may help on their application. A Section A is required for each of the ranked project areas.
Selected youth learn from college professionals associated with UT Extension, stay in a dorm, eat at a dining hall, swim in the university pool, etc. (Youth usually go to Dollywood one afternoon, too.) The cost of the conference is $50. However, there may be other costs related to transportation and meals along the way. For youth in western Tennessee, they usually have a bus that meets in Jackson that youth can ride for an additional $25 – parents are responsible for getting youth to/from Jackson. We should find out if youth are selected at the end of April or early May.
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Extension office (901-465-5233) for application materials. The applications need to be returned to us by March 29th.
